Balıkesir Metropolitan Municipality will protect biodiversity by cleaning the Aegean and Marmara Seas from ghost nets for 5 years within the scope of a protocol signed with Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University.

Balıkesir Metropolitan Municipality, which formed “Türkiye's most ghost net cleaning team” in the Aegean and Marmara Seas for 3 years within the scope of the protocol signed with Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University, continues to clean the seas from ghost nets by extending the protocol period for another 5 years. The Metropolitan Municipality, which will increase its fight against ghost nets that cause trapping and drowning of wild animals under the sea and jeopardize the maritime and fishing economy, will act with the motto “The seas are the guarantee of our future.” At the ceremony held at Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University, Mehmet Hezer, Animal Production, Slaughterhouses and Fisheries Branch Manager representing Balıkesir Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ahmet Akın, signed the protocol with Rector Prof. Dr. Ramazan Cüneyt Erenoğlu.

With the protocol, projects such as cleaning ghost nets in the Aegean and Marmara Seas, creating artificial reef areas, protecting underwater values specific to our region such as red corals, supporting small fishermen and developing underwater diving tourism will be carried out for 5 years.
